Erroll Garner Biographie ~ Pianiste, Compositeur

1921 Le 15 juin, naissance d’Erroll Garner à Pittsburg (Pensylvanie). A un frère jumeau, Ernest Keen. Son père joue de la trompette, son frère Linton et sa soeur Martha du piano.
1924 Se met au piano. Complètement autodidacte, ne reçoit aucune formation musicale, n’apprendra jamais à lire la musique.
1931 Première émission de radio avec les Kan-D-Kids
1937 Débuts professionnels à Pittsburgh. Premier disque
1938-41 Membre de l’orchestre Leroy Brown
1942 Accompagne la chanteuse Ann Lewis à New-York
1944 Encouragé par Billy Strayhorn, il déménage à New York où il joue dans les Nightclubs de la 52ème Rue, principalement au Tondelayo's où il devient vite le pianiste de la maison. Il lui arrive un jour de jouer dans quatre club différents la même nuit. Il lui arrive aussi de remplacer Art Tatum dans le Tatum's trio avec Tiny Grimes et Slam Stewart.
Il enregistre son premier titre nommé plus tard Overture to Dawn dans l'appartement d'un fan de jazz danois : Baron Timmie Rosenkrantz qui sortira plus tard sur le label Blue Note.
Il joue avec Slam Stewart dans le Slam Stewart Trio
1945 Il forme son trio avec basse, batterie. (John Simmons et Harold 'Doc' West). Les enregistrements de cette période sortiront sur Savoy, Atlantic, et divers labels indépendants. Son talent en solo ou en trio lui attire un large public.
Il développe un style résolument personnel. Il est aussi à l’aise à faire naître le swing que la mélodie. Il est en dehors des lignes tracées du jazz traditionnel.
1946 Premier séjour en Californie
1947 Enregistre avec Charlie Parker. Parution de Erroll’s Bounce, Play Piano Play, Cocktail Time, Blues Garni.
1948 En mai, joue au Théâtre Marigny, Paris
1950 Commence à être demandé à la télévision et où il se produira régulièrement durant les années 50 et 60.
1951 Parution de Laura
1952 Tournée « Piano Parade » avec Art Tatum et Meade Lux Lewis
1953 Compose Misty, qui sera repris avec des paroles de Johnny Burke, par Dakota Staton, Sarah Vaughan, Johnny Mathis (59), Lloyd Price (63),
The Vibrations (65), Richard Groove Holmes (66), Ray Stevens (75) et des centaines d'autres depuis sa création.
1955 « Concert by the sea », enregistré à Carmel, Californie. L'album restera une des meilleures ventes de jazz de la décennie
1957 Première tournée européenne. Grand Prix du disque à Paris. Down Beat Award. Les années suivantes, nombreuses tournées internationales. Sortie de l'album Other Voices, incluant Misty (l'album atteint les charts Billboard)
1963 Ses compositions Erroll's Bounce et Blues Garni sont utilisées pour le film A New Kind Of Love
1959-73 Enregistre désormais pour son propre label, « Octave Records »
1971 Réenregistre « Misty », sa composition la plus célèbre pour le film « Play Misty For Me » de Clint Eastwood
1973 Dernier disque : « Magician »
1975 8 avril, à Los Angeles, opéré d’un cancer du poumon
1977 2 janvier, Garner décède à Los Angeles




Erroll Garner reste dans le souvenir de ses amis musiciens comme un homme plein d'humour, et un artiste au talent exceptionnel et original.
